Tegan and Sara with Northern State

Canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin have been playing and recording together since middle school, starting with homemade cassette releases laid down in their bedroom and winding up " after a good eight years touring the world in support of artists like Rufus Wainwright and Neil Young " with this year's The Con, produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla. It's been averred that it's Sara who brings the pop hooks to Tegan's melancholy, wispy poetry. No matter who's responsible for what, though, The Con is a dense, swarming record full of computerized beats and lush washes of synthesizer that would be pure '80s dance-pop without its curiously dark, emotional undercurrent. Northern State is a trio of female MCs from New York City whose smart, slightly bent lyrical sensibilities and classic hip-hop beats recently found a home on the smart, slightly bent Ipecac Records (the label run by Mike Patton). Their debut for Ipecac, Can I Keep This Pen?, came out in August. Tickets $21. " Alison Fensterstock
